Before the letters reach us, I wondered about how people would compare SF Day and SF Friends... my sense is that Friends may be better for social/emotional learning and Day is better for academics (does Friends have learning specialists like the Day school). Of course, we'll be equally happy with a sweet little public school...

I don't know if I'd necessarily simplify the differences that way, at least based on my impressions from the tours. SF Day has always been known for being very academically challening and Dr. Jackson's emphasis on differentiated learning led him to add learning specialists for each grade. Day also has a great arts program and is involved in the community, e.g. Breakthrough program and buddy schools with Tenderloin Community and others. For Friends, I thing the Quaker underpinning lends itself to more reflection and examination of the social, emotional aspect. It is still academically challenging. I think they have learning specialists as well but more for the entire school rather than grade specific. It also is intimately involved with the community. Both schools are focused on promoting diversity. I would say there are more similarities than differences, other than SF Day being more established.
