This from the N.Y. Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/30/nyregion/30pta.html) by Andy Newman:
A former PTA treasurer at a public school in Brooklyn has been indicted on charges that she embezzled about $100,000 from the organization over a two-year period.

The former treasurer, Providence Hogan, owner of the upscale Providence Day Spa about 10 blocks from the school, Public School 29 in Cobble Hill, misappropriated the money between 2006 and 2008, the Brooklyn district attorney’s office said after unsealing a 22-count indictment against Ms. Hogan.

Prosecutors said she used the money for fertility treatments and to pay the rent on her store and her apartment. A law enforcement official said that Ms. Hogan told investigators she took the money to “keep her family living in the lifestyle they were accustomed to.” Prosecutors said she concealed her thefts by falsifying documents, though they would not elaborate.

Investigators said they were able to track about $82,000 of the money.

The top charge against Ms. Hogan, second-degree grand larceny, carries a sentence of up to 15 years in prison.
