We received too youngs from a couple other places so we'll be doing PreK again next year. When we do reapply next year, how should we interpret these too young letters? Is it all but automatic that our son will get in to the ones that sent a too young letter?

I also thought that "too young" is code word for reapply next year and you should get in. However, one of our friends got waitlisted at a school that sent them a too young last year. They were shocked and disappointed. It's better to be saft and not assume anything, which unfortunately means going through this painful process all over again.

One thing I've learned after this process is not taking anything for granted. We heard that one of our friend's daughter, even with an older sibling at the school, was no guarantee for this year's class because she was on the cusp of the age cutoff.

Personally, I think some schools are using too young letters as a polite way of saying that compared to the rest of the applicants applying in your general age range, we are not going to consider you this year. I know a child with a May birthday (turn's 5 in May), who got into 2/3 single sex schools they applied to and the 3rd sent a too young letter. Now, if the child is old enough for 2 of the schools, why not the 3rd? It does not mean that next year they would not get in to the 3rd school but I don't think "too young" is any guarantee. However, if you have a boy with say a July 13th Birthday, I would think "too young" just really means "too young."

edsanfran, is that child a boy or a girl? I know a couple girls with May/June/July birthdays who got into one or more of the all girls schools but got too young from one other school. In those cases, it was Hamlin who sent out the too youngs. Why, I'm not sure.

Not Hamlin who sent the too young letter.
