The parents of about 2,000 youngsters might not know if they got the spots they applied for in city schools until the day before classes start.

The Education Department is sending out letters and posting online the fates of 8,500 prospective prekindergartners. But because 2,000 parents didn't apply for the coveted slots online, they'll have to wait for letters to arrive over the next few days.

Anxious parents say finding out only a day before Wednesday's first of day of school would be maddening. "I just want to ask them a question: Why?" said Paul Mowry, whose daughter Ellie applied to six schools in May and four more in July when she didn't get a spot. "When I tell anyone outside New York City that there's this process, people are incredulous."
