This from Aristotle Circle (http://www.aristotlecircle.com/blog/get-ahead-test-prep-block-design):

This series helps parents understand the skills a child will need to pass the kindergarten and first grade entrance exams and provides tips on how to start building these skills early.

What is block design?

Block design tests a childís ability to arrange bi-colored blocks to match a shown model or printed image. It is used on the WISC, WPPSI, ERB, OLSAT and Stanford-Binet.

How early can I start teaching my child block design?

A child develops the ability to build a block tower and hold a crayon well around the age of 3. Exposing your child to blocks and puzzle pieces is one way to practice this skill. Another skill this tests is mastering representation and replication. Practice this skill by having your child look at a scene and then draw what they see or ask them to copy something that you have drawn or built.

Some tips for practicing block design skills:

Donít dismiss wrong answers Rather than dismissing wrong answer encourage your child to do the task as quickly as possible. Tell them not to worry if they cannot get the answer right away.
Recognize everyday opportunity to practice Using fine motor grips, recognizing patterns and putting together puzzles or repeating patterns are all skills that come up in everyday play.

Aristotle Circle provides sample tests and complete practice workbooks (http://store.aristotlecircle.com/) for all major private school entrance exams. Contact us with questions about tutoring or exam requirements. Visit our test date calendar to decide when to schedule your child for the test.

This post is a little misleading. Please be aware that block Design is actually not on the OLSAT and the Stanford-Binet generally utilizes tangrams, rather than blocks, at least in NY.

We agree that it is fun to practice and is an important component of the ERB administered tests: WPPSI-III and WISC-IV. Our block design (http://www.brightkidsnyc.com/shop/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=7&category_id=8&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1) and advanced block design (http://www.brightkidsnyc.com/shop/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=18&category_id=11&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1) books have wonderful tips and come with eco-friendly, single color, and dual color blocks (http://www.brightkidsnyc.com/shop/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=4&category_id=12&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1)for at-home practice.

All the best with the prepping!
