From NY Gifted Education Examiner (http://www.examiner.com/gifted-education-in-new-york/school-tours-harlem-academy-admissions-2011) by Alina Adams:
One of the main pieces of advice when searching for a private school for your child is to apply broadly, i.e. don't just focus your attention on girls' schools, or progressive schools, or schools that regularly get 800 applications for only 40 Kindergarten seats.

To that end, we visited the Harlem Academy (http://www.harlemacademy.org/), located on 1330 Fifth Avenue (between 11th and 112th Street - there is an express train stop right on 110th for easy access.)

The Harlem Academy is a 1st through 8th grade co-ed independent school, with their initial 8th grade class scheduled to graduate in the Spring of 2012.

The school accepts around 16 children per class for the first grade, and on a rolling, space available basis for the other grades. Tuition is sliding scale.

One part of their mission statement: At this school, striving for academic excellence is not a means for standing out but a way to fit in, truly appealed to my husband and I.

Just like literature regarding all-girls' schools asserts that girls do better in a single-sex classroom because then there is less of a stigma to being smart, and advocates for gifted education argue for G&T's where kids don't have to feel like freaks for wanting to learn, the notion of a school that expects nothing less than excellence from (mostly) children of color is a great selling point.

And the work that we saw exhibited on Harlem Academy's walls certainly confirmed that they practice what they preach.
