Parents at a Park Slope elementary school, already fuming that construction has put their kids' playground off-limits for 18 months, are now looking at a much longer time without the space.

At a meeting Wednesday night, angry Public School 39 parents were told that repairs to the Sixth Ave. building were likely to stretch to three years - twice as long as the original estimate.

The work required that scaffolding be erected around the school last month, cutting off access to PS 39's playground and new vegetable garden - 10 months before the work was even set to begin.

"We're being denied the use of our playground, which is going to be wrapped in scaffolding for a year before a hammer gets picked up," said PS 39 Principal Anita De Paz at a heated meeting with School Construction Authority officals.

"It does not sit well with me that we're looking at a year of paperwork."

SCA officials insisted the extra time was needed because extensive problems with the 134-year-old building's roof and moldings were found during inspections prior to starting work on leaky gutters and damaged cornices.

But SCA officials conceded at the meeting that getting permits from the state Historical Preservation Office also added to the extended time.

Actually the children won't access to an outdoor space for at least 3 years, maybe more.
