As much as we hate to do it, my husband and I talked about moving out of the city for more predictability in schools. Between Mill Valley and Ross, which school system would you choose? Is there another town we should look at? With all the great public schools in Marin, is there any reason to look at privates?

To be honest, you can't really go wrong with the school system in MV or Ross. Both are great. Go visit the schools and see what you like. MV is based on assignment whereas Ross is based on neighborhood (with the possibility of intra district transfer). Also get a feel for the towns and see what you prefer. If commuting into the city is a factor, MV is closer drive but you can also take the ferry from Larkspur. I would also add Kentfield, Larkspur and Reed Union (Tiburon/Belvedere) districts to your list.

The 2010 API scores for Marin County were just released. Here are the scores for the areas you're interested in and the additional ones acampermom suggested.

Mill Valley (overall) 932
Edna Maquire Elementary 947
Old Mill Elementary 939
Park Elementary 929
Strawberry Point Elementary 910
Tamalpais Valley Elementary 941
Mill Valley Middle 932

Kentfield (overall) 940
Bacich Elementary 947
Kent Middle 937

Larkspur (overall) 920
Cummins Elemenatry 918
Hall Middle 921

Ross Valley (overall) 920
Brookside Elementary 931
Manor Elementary 901
Wade Thomas Elementary 928
White Hill Middle 919

Reed Union (overall) 953
Bel Aire Elementary 960
Reed Elementary 937
Del Mar Middle 952

They're all above 900 so that's really good, at least from a test score perspective. Never hurts to visit the schools themselves to get a flavor of what each is like. If you want to see API scores for all of Marin County, here's the link:
