Pictures were taken, hugs and kisses exchanged, and only a few tears shed Wednesday morning outside the Brandeis Educational Campus on West 84th Street, where kindergartners lined up for the first day of school.

Other than the fact that classes were beginning more than two weeks before they will at most city schools, the new Upper West Success Academy seemed to be having a pretty typical first day.

On Thursday morning, with the school year beginning for the kindergarten students, parents were happy to put the legal turmoil behind them.

“Every parent deserves to feel as excited as we do dropping off our daughter on her first day of kindergarten,” said J. C. Renner, whose child, Grace, 5, was among the first group of students.

The neighborhood school for Mr. Renner’s daughter is Public School 191 on the Upper West Side, which that received a letter grade of C on its 2009-10 Department of Education progress report.

“Everyone contributes the same taxwise, so why should my child have to go to a bad school?” said Mr. Renner’s wife, Susan.
