Since Mayor Rahm Emanuel first proposed the idea of a longer school day next fall, critics have wondered how much the initiative would cost and whether a cash-strapped district could afford it.

Chicago Public Schools still have not tallied up the cost of the longer day, but as district officials continue to hand out school-based budgets over the next few days, principals are learning that they collectively will get an additional $130 million in discretionary money next year.

But when asked if the $130 million was the price tag for the longer day, Chief Administrative Officer Tim Cawley said it would be hard to compute.

"I know everyone wants to know what that number is," Cawley said. "The reality is this discretionary fund is for a number of purposes, structuring the day, acquiring materials, training teachers. ... Arguably, because this money is so flexible, it'll be impossible to know exactly what (the longer day) costs."

That answer will not satisfy the longer school day's biggest critics.
