New York City private schools won't delay their deadline for requiring deposits—even though it falls two days before the city notifies students about their acceptances to public high schools, officials said Thursday.

As a result, some families may be forced to pay thousands of dollars to secure a spot at an independent school 48 hours before they learn whether their children earned a place in a top public high school. Several private schools, however, said they would consider granting extensions on a case-by-case basis.

Private-school deadlines are regulated by the Independent Schools Admissions Association of Greater New York, which promised to revisit its decision last month to keep the March 13 date in place after some schools expressed concern.

But in an online vote by the schools conducted two weeks ago, the response was "overwhelmingly in favor of not moving the date, but working with every case on a case-by-case basis," said Patricia Hayot, a designated spokeswoman for the association and head of the Chapin School.

About 67% of the schools voted not to extend the deadline, with the rest of the votes split between two proposed alternative dates, March 20 or April 6, she said. Still, she said she was confident that most schools would voluntarily offer extensions to families caught in this situation. That belief was echoed by several schools.
