The relocation of The Cityís main arts high school as part of the creation of a downtown education hub will be discussed at tonightís Board of Education meeting.

The proposal would move Ruth Asawa School of the Arts to a downtown site as part of the planned citywide arts education center at 135 Van Ness Ave.

Mark Cavagnero, the architect who designed the SFJAZZ Center, will show concepts to the board tonight.

The hope is to create an education hub connecting the Ruth Asawa School of the Arts, the San Francisco Unified School Districtís Visual & Performing Arts Department and the Nourse Theater.

The Ruth Asawa School of the Arts was created in 1982 and named after local arts pioneer Ruth Asawa in 2011. The flagship arts high school features training in visual arts, dance, vocal and instrumental music, drama, theater technology and design, media arts and creative writing.

The district has hoped to relocate its arts school to downtown for the past 15 years as a way of bringing arts education to an area where the opera, symphony and other performing arts are centralized.

The meeting begins at 6 p.m. at 555 Franklin St. The special meeting will not include any voting on the matter.
