Amy C. Woodson was appointed as Hamlin’s next Lower School division head, effective July 1, 2011. She is currently in her third year as the Lower School Director at Ashley Hall, a 2-year olds through Grade 12 all-girls school in Charleston, South Carolina. Prior to that time, she worked for fifteen years in various teaching and leadership positions at The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, Georgia.

In her written statement of educational philosophy, she spoke powerfully about her commitment to 21st century teaching and learning:

“I believe that schools can no longer simply teach a body of knowledge to students; rather, teachers must be trained, equipped and supported to help students develop a concrete skill set to teach them how to think, find information and work together… These students will enter a world that is changing so rapidly, we can hardly envision what it will be like for them. We do know some very simple facts. They are part of a world that is a global community, and they must be prepared as citizens. They will have to work collaboratively and creatively to be successful. They need to know how to get information and to solve complex problems. They will rely on technology. So, teaching approaches such as academic choice, project-based learning, and experiential education will be the norm for excellent schools…. I see myself as uniquely qualified to serve Hamlin in the next phase of growth. The articulation of the school’s vision for 21st century learning and core values as they relate to the mission are on the front burner…but, perhaps most importantly, I have a passion for children. I enjoy being with them, find them courageous and funny, and delight in traveling the journey of school alongside them.”
