There is so much conflicting info on whether to send a FC or ILY. Is there really a difference? Don't some schools not want a letter of any kind?

First Choice letter means you're going to take the spot if offered. Send a FC letter to a school only if you have a clear frontrunner and you have a very good feeling about getting into the school (positive feedback would help). You can send ILY letters to the other schools you liked and would attend if the FC falls through. Technically, ISAAGNY says schools aren't supposed to ask for FCs but so much for that.

Wouldn't the schools know that you didn't FC them if you send them just ILYs? In that case, would those schools just waitlist your child or even worse reject them? And how should we communicate with our preschool director about what we do?

I think schools understand. You should keep your PSD informed and work with her so that she keeps the schools you sent ILYs to interested, even if you get positive feedback from your FC. The DOAs talk to your PSD to understand how candidates are thinking.

If we get positive feedback from our second/third choices but none (positive or negative) from our first choice, what would you have done?

If they are not your first choice and you're still holding out hope, then ILY letters to the other two are fine. However, don't say "you are one of our top choices." Focus on what stood out about the school and why you think it's the right fit for your child and your family for the next 13 years (assuming it's an ongoing).

I'm getting confused here. Why bother sending a ILY letter at all since the school will know they're not your first choice, no?

The point of an ILY is to let the school know that you are still very interested. As another poster said, you need to be able to articulate why you really like the school. That way, when your PSD goes to bat for you, she's not blowing hot air. In case your FC falls through, your PSD can then verbal to the school you sent the ILY too that it's now your FC.
