Decision week is finally here. I would imagine most, if not all, of us have been anticipating this week since our very first school tour back in September. Letters are going out on Thursday March 17 so we should be receiving them on Friday. Please share here what you hear. Good luck everybody!

I've been able to maintain my calm but the closer we get to Friday, the more nervous I'm getting. I'm playing out all different scenarios in my head. What if we got into this school or that school? What if we only got into this other school? Am I the only one doing this?

For those of you who applied to Convent, you probably received a large white envelope like we did today. Don't know about you but I was scared and excited to open it up and at the same time somewhat puzzled that an envelope would have arrived already. I went ahead and opened it; it was the school's latest bulletin. I let out a big sigh (for now at least). It was such a tease! But I wouldn't mind another large envelope come Friday.....

We received one too yesterday from Convent. My heart was racing so fast as I opened it. Guess we're waiting until Friday.

Daddy Drama - That is amazing! Tell us your secret.
I really wish I knew the secret other than us being very lucky. It may be the numbers (heard it was easier year for girls). Somehow, we were able to make a connection with all the admissions directors that accepted us without being over the top, at least I think we weren't. We basically took the approach of wanting to know the schools as best as we could rather than stress out about getting into any particular school. Also, I think our daughter is pretty comfortable with the playdates/screenings based on how much fun she says she had. Is it us, is it her or is it the numbers? I really don't know. I really wish I could give you a more direct answer but that wouldn't be true.

cookiecakepie - we didn't have any connections at the schools.

We only got 1 of the 6 we applied to (2 boys, 4 coeds), which was French American. I'm very happy about FAIS so don't mind not getting in the other 5. Was it just us or did it feel like a tougher year for boys?

We got into Nueva and one of the all boys schools in the city. Nueva had been my first choice but now we're accepted, I'm having second thoughts. Do we put up with the commute for the unique environment? Or do we do the easy thing and go to the boys school close to home where it'll be easier to set up playdates or activities with my son's friends? Any suggestions?

A couple of our accepts had a personal note, which is a nice touch. If you had a personal note on the waitlist letter, I'd definitely take that as a positive.

As far as WL at Friends opening up, if you really want Friends over SFDS, convey that to them. Tell them you're willing to give up a spot at SFDS for them. I would imagine they'd put you near the top of the waitpool knowing how much you want the school. Congratulations by the way!!!

This has been quite a roller coaster ride for us. We started not even knowing whether we'd apply to San Francisco Day, ended up applying and got in. Absolutely thrilled with getting in. Meanwhile some of our friends got into one or two of the schools but are not their top choices and may pursue the waitpool for their first choice. What a musical chair. I really hope it works out for everybody.

Any boy May birthdays get into a boy school?

Sorry to not answer your question before. I haven't heard any May birthdays get in. All I've heard is that it's been a very competitive year for boys in general which makes it that much tougher for boys on the cusp. of the birthday cutoff. Last year it was tough for girls but this year boys. This is one wacky process.

Let me try to rephrase what I meant so as not to discourage you. We have a friend whose son's birthday is around the informal cutoff. He was waitlisted at multiple schools, not outright rejected. So there is still a chance he clears the waitlist. Not impossible but difficult, especially this year. Hope that clarifies what I was trying to say. Some May boys are ready, some aren't. The decision is very specific to the child.

I posted earlier but I know boys with May birthdays (and girls) that got too young letters and reapplied and got in the following year. I also know boys with May and June birthdays at coeds and at least one boy with an April and another with a May that attend one of the boys schools, but not who got in this year. If you did not get a too young letter, your son is likely ready for K and I would work the wait lists.

@sfkinder. I don't know of any May birthdays (5 years old now) that got into the boys schools. I know of a few that got too young or waitpool. I know 6 year old May Birthdays that got into Town & Stuart Hall. Our friends that got shut out last year had to do the process again this year and it all worked out for them.

We have a boy, got MCDS and are taking it. (btw, he is not a spring birthday).

We're really having a tough time deciding between all boys or coed. The all boys would be perfect for our son but do we really want to apply again in a couple years for his sister? Should we base the decision on what's best for our son or for the whole family? Anybody know whether we can ask to visit the school again?

Peeper
03-21-2011, 07:06 PM
I would go for the perfect boys school slot if I were you (I am mom to a boy). My understanding is that the boys schools have informal agreements with corresponding girls schools that may give your daughter some edge in the admissions process at the relevant school. (Your could verify this with the school and/or your preschool director.) And yes, you can contact the school to ask about a visit also.

That's unfortunate. I'm just passing on what I was told at the boys' schools in town. Of course there are no guarantees. Hard to say what I would have done if I had had to make the same choice, but I would probably have gone for the boys school if it seemed like a perfect fit.

Yeah, what I've heard too is that Hamlin and Town have some sort of informal relationship but offer no guarantee. The only all boys with sibling policy for sisters is Stuart Hall at Convent. Probably leaning towards Town. Thanks for throwing in your two cents.

Congrats. Two great schools. We felt that the traditional / rigid CAIS approach didn't quite suit our child (or us for that matter), and this for us was more important than the Chinese immersion. The new Director has stated that he is going to try to bring more differentiated instruction principles into the school, however, as a number of parents we spoke to said their kids needed help working through their "stresses" at school.

Through the whole process we didn't have a first choice, which was good since we didn't get hung up on any particular school. We did have a top few, from which we received two offers. On the other hand, the final decision was a stressful one since we didn't have a "first choice" school.

As for speed of decision, it was less about the school and more about courtesy to those in wait pools, so we made a point to make a quick decision.

Your first sentence describes our approach perfectly. Stay open minded since we had no idea if we'd even have a choice. We never expressed a first choice for better or worse, but that was how we felt. We only applied to schools we could see our daughter at and skipped the ones we couldn't, including a high profile one.

We were back and forth throughout the weekend. It ultimately was a gut call since each of the schools who offered us is a great school.

My guess is that PSDs can help a little and convey how much you want a school to the admissions directors. But getting off the waitlist really depends on how many candidates turn down offers and what their profile is (e.g. gender, age, personality, demographics). The DOAs are trying to put together a class so as one candidate drops off, they're going to find someone else in the waitpool who has similar characteristics and really want to be at the school.

I know it's easy for me to say but try to hang in there. People have until 10am Thursday to decide and the process doesn't end right then and there. People who haven't released all their offers will do so by then and then the DOAs will have a better idea what is available for the waitpool.

I swear bartman and I are not the same person though we seem to think alike.

Speaking of CAIS, you have to look at your child and see if he or she can thrive in the school's more traditional approach. Our daughter went to the summer camp there and didn't do well with the structure, coming from a play-based preschool. We told ourselves maybe it was just the summer camp but saw similar rigidity in the lower grade classrooms on the tour. We ended up not applying. That said, we have friends who love the structure for their boys. You know your child best so go with your gut on what the best environment is for your child to flourish.

AUDAD, I hear ya - I am catholic, liked Convent but decided our kids would be better off in a more open environment.

The other schools may not have the catholic component but they are very distinguished schools that have a rich history steeped in tradition, values & service to the community. Hamlin & Burke's both do a great job of lighting a moral compass for their kids. Take out the old Hamlin or Burke's brochures we got way back when we first looked at the schools - they are impressive, filled with hope, thoughtful expressions & compassion driven by their service learning curriculum. Of course, Convent is an amazing school - you can't go wrong with your choices.

Good luck with your decision!!

This whole process has been an incredible (and frustrating) learning process. We got into 3 of the 5 schools that we applied to, but not the two that we really had our hearts set on. The three that we did get into were all great schools, and two in particular made the decision process difficult. To complicate matters, we went 0/10 in the public school process, so we felt like we lost the option of public for a year (or at all--I'm not holding out hope that round 2 will be better) and trying again for the two we loved next year. At the end of the day, we ultimately decided to decline all three and move out of the city. It wasn't a decision that we made lightly, and in fact agonized over until the last minute. It didn't seem fair to other families who perhaps were holding out hope for one of those schools when we found ourselves unable to commit. As someone earlier had mentioned, we were told that the yield this year was unprecedented (and probably helped by the craziness of the public school process). Congratulations to everyone who got their child into the school they wanted and best of luck to those still waiting!

Can I inquire which 5 schools did you apply to ..

Has anyone had or heard of movement from the parochial's now that people have had to commit to private? Specifically curious about SVDP, NDV & St. Brendan's.

Our acceptance from SFDS came with a personal note too -- is that usual? Plain old waitlist letter from Friends (our first choice). Any idea about how often waitlist spots for Friends open up?

seekingpeace - did you ever clear the waitpool at Friends or did you go with SFDS? Either way, congrats!

I never heard from Friends -- and noticed on the blog that many other families received calls from Friends in the past two weeks. So, for whatever reason, we aren't what they were looking for this year.

We did accept SF Day as I found the AD warm and sincere, and they were able to give us a nice financial aid packet. I also realized that it was my discomfort with private schools that led to my feeling unsettled (not my child's issue). That, and our public placement was in a school with a rude principal and no library...

In the end, I truly believe that this is similar to looking for the perfect college or the perfect job -- it doesn't exist. And, I truly don't know what gave us the acceptance instead of many lovely friends who also applied. That also leaves me uncomfortable with this whole process....

Did you first choice Friends during the process? And fully agree on Homa. She is super sweet and down to earth. To be able to manage the number of applicants they get yet maintain her warmth and sincerity is no easy feat.

I hear ya on the process. There's no perfect school. The schools are obviously looking for something specific from the plethora of information each applicant provides, and each has a set of criteria a little different than others. As others have mentioned, their needs are also different depending on the profiles of the siblings already admitted to the class. I compare it to a job interview - you put your best foot forward and hope there's a match.

Congrats again. And thank you for letting me be nosy.

Very bummed to be shut out. Never thought we wouldn't even get one school. I guess we're lucky to have submitted a public school application and received one of our top three. Does anybody know if schools call up candidates before school starts if a spot happens to open up from people moving or whatever other reason (or know of a friend who got such a call)? I know not to count on it but want to have at least a thread of hope.

hrosemom, over the last few years, I have heard of 2 families that received open spots. Both, right around the time payments were due which differs I think by school. Though, you might be in a better position to transfer into your first choice in 1st or 2nd grade from public then from a private not super high on your list. Best wishes.

I think staying in contact with the ADs over the next months and staying visible will be helpful.

I know a family who accepted an offer and put down a deposit because they did not get a good public in Round 1. However, after receiving their choice public school in Round 2 (which happens in May I believe), they released their private spot before the end of May, which for most privates is the deadline whereby you are contractually liable for an entire year's tuition.

I've also heard of others who had their children in public school for the first week of school at which time they pulled out after they received a call from their first choice private.

I was wondering the same thing but you beat me to the punch. It makes sense that transferring out of a private to another private might be tougher than public as bartman said so we'll probably go that way as well.

Asking for a friend who's applying next year. Do any of you know of twins who got into the same private school?

This year? Yes. One of the boys schools. Previous years? Yes. One of the girls schools.

Do you know if they had choices or they went to where they were accepted? Trying to help my friend set appropriate expectations. Thank you.

I know one of the families had a choice between an independent and a parochial. The independent was their top choice. I don't know if the other family had choices. Keep in mind that having one choice (only) is still a great outcome, since presumably your friends will only apply to schools that they really like.

They're not religious so parochial is out. I'm definitely passing the info along so they know what they're in for. Thank you again.

The more time that passes since the decision deadline, the more I've about people releasing spots at various schools. Just about every school had multiple people releasing spots. However, I barely hear of anybody getting off waitlists. What gives?

One of our friends is moving to the suburbs after her son, recently turned 6, didn't get in anywhere. We'll probably try again next year but wouldn't be surprised if we make an exodus too.

Has anybody heard about waitlist movements over the summer? Until school starts, I'm trying to hold out whatever little hope I have that we may get lucky.

This is second hand info but I heard that a girl got off the waitlist at one of the girls' schools in the past month.
