For the second time nine elementary schools in The City have been named California Distinguished Schools in a given year, district officials announced Wednesday.

Chinese Immersion School at DeAvila, Clarendon Elementary, Grattan Elementary, Gordon J. Lau Elementary, McKinley Elementary, Sunnyside Elementary, West Portal Elementary, and Lawton and Claire Lilienthal Alternative schools were among 424 public elementary schools designated as Distinguished Schools for 2014, according to the California Department of Education.

All but two of the schools, Clarendon and Lawton, are receiving the distinction for the first time. Schools hold the distinction for four years.
