Queens NY - Baccalaureate school for global education: Admission process

    Hi Parents,

Anyone has been thru admission process for Queens High School?

I want to understand the selection to test and their actual test better.

    Thanks

They've changed things up by bits over the past few years, as have many other schools with tests and "involved admissions." As with many of these schools, they're their own beast if you will. What questions do you have?

    Thanks Greg

    - I wanted to understand if the "selection to test" scores ( based on 5th grade tests) are used for final selection or only the "onsite test" scores.
    - Also if long essay writing is part of ELA component of the test.
    - Is the baccalaureate math ahead of NY state stds ( by one / two grade ?)
    - I didn't understand (on their website) their pre-selection process ( what is group 1 /2/ 3 is all about?). Are they trying to get a diversity in capability/test performance ?one

Anyone who attended open house or been thru their admission process. Please enlighten.

One would think that with all the discussion going on about school admissions that ALL of these website would be crystal clear but instead they are ALL written to be a big mess. And that has to be on purpose. Transparency is totally out the window instead favoring confusion and chaos. Shame on everybody from the Mayor on down. I had to say this because nobody can obtain answers from these descriptions even when you ask them directly you can get run arounds and ambiguity. Sigh. So with that vacuum I respond below as best I can. The below pertains to Grade 7 entry (I mention this as Grade 9 entry is different).

It's my understanding that the selection to test scores are only used up to the interview. That said, you've already been grouped, so what they'd doing is created bands of applicants. That said, despite what the words say, they do still ask for your report card although it's optional plus they are asking for two years of state test info again and past and current report cards for the interview despite what the words say. Some slipperiness here IMO. So the truth of the matter is that it's being used even after the interview, at least in some cases. Note that in the past there was no screen anybody could take the test, but now there is the "selection to test" scores screen thing first.

Yes, writing is part of the "interview" (they seem to refuse to call it a test or an exam). It was shifted from the entrance test to the interview stage. I've also heard it was removed altogether but can't confirm that so have to go with that it's still there.

I don't think it is ahead in math per se. Let me explain. Kind of official descriptions indicate it is, but in my working with kids getting an IB and/or not getting a NY State diploma well I have found it to not really be the case. (But they still take Regents and can get a NYS Advanced Regents Diploma too. Note that graduating from Baccalaureate with an IB diploma is NOT a guarantee (you may not be a candidate for one, and even if you are you won't find out until after your graduate if you got one).) But it is different and some parts are harder and/or accelerated. Note that the reason you don't start Baccalaureate in 8th grade is to get students up to speed for where they'll need to be during Grade 7. So they do a special pre-IB thing. And eventually things get more intense in Grade 11 and 12. Note also that you don't get any AP classes instead you get IB classes.

Yes the goal of the Groups is diversity. They are not just picking the top students. They will also keep those kids physically together in their group for the interview too. In fact part of your results is to have to work together with another candidate during the interview. Note that the student body class size is not large. Think it was about 120 and now I think about half that. (In some of these "admissions schools" kids leave to enter a NYC SHS so there is that issue too they have to contend with. I'm not sure if the cut in half size is some measure to reign that in.)

The DOE gets slippery on this, but think from just before mid-March onward.

HS admission results were made available on 3/19 thru myschools. If you did not get an offer from this school then you can join the waiting list. Admissions to this school is very tough due to high demand and priority for continuing 8th graders.

Edit: YOU WILL NOT HEAR DIRECTLY FROM THE SCHOOL YOUR RESULTS IN CASE YOU WERE UNDER THAT IMPRESSION!!!

Not quite. BSGE has a middle school entry point and a HS entry point. The HS entry point results were released last week. Check myschools. If it's not there call the DOE at 718-935-2009. The MS entry point results will be released next month. When next month? They won't say yet.
