Coronavirus Impact on Learning
As things seem to be evolving now with many college campuses already closed for at least the month, etc. as well as two Bronx public school closings this morning, seems we need to be finding a common ground and central point about concerns, resources, etc. as this becomes our day to day situation.
I'd like the discussion to be sane and informative and when possible to avoid posting rumors as facts.Passionate tutor of Elementary School subjects specializing in NY state tests, and the specialized high/middle school tests (SHSAT, Hunter, TACHS/CHSEE, ISEE, SSAT, ERB, ...)

Today The Laboratory School of Finance and Technology, and South Bronx Preparatory: A College Board School closed.
They will be closed for (at least) 24 hours.
Currently the state is requiring this of a school as it will be cleaned, as a student or staff member was reported with the virus that's been in the news. As well they will try to determine the pathology (who else may have gotten it, etc.).Passionate tutor of Elementary School subjects specializing in NY state tests, and the specialized high/middle school tests (SHSAT, Hunter, TACHS/CHSEE, ISEE, SSAT, ERB, ...)

From this article https://www.silive.com/coronavirus/2...c-schools.html
Mayor Bill de Blasio said during a press conference Monday that closing schools in New York City is currently “not on the menu here.”
"Is there a theoretical scenario where that could happen? Of course, but is it anywhere near to where we are now? No,” he said.
From this article https://www.pix11.com/news/coronavir...virus-outbreak
"Of course safety first, but they depend on the schools, they are a safe place for their kids and by the way, they want their kids to keep getting educated," he said. "So to me it's a high bar for a closure. One thing I think makes sense is if you have a situation in a school, a temporary closure"
Based on his statements, a student or teacher has to die of the virus before the mayor and chancellor will do anything SMH

Re "closing schools in New York City is currently “not on the menu here.”" let's first clarify that he's talking about a major schools closure not cleaning closures or "special case" closures.
That said, I suspect the Mayor is in another situation that he's going to have to eventually about face on perhaps by moving the Spring Break to a time very close to now as well as shifting the state tests dates at the least.Passionate tutor of Elementary School subjects specializing in NY state tests, and the specialized high/middle school tests (SHSAT, Hunter, TACHS/CHSEE, ISEE, SSAT, ERB, ...)

FYI, Success Academy schools are moving to online learning next week. No, it's not general public school but with some ~20K students thought I'd mention it.

Los Angeles schools (LAUSD) with 600,000 students has closed K-12 schools. There will be mounting pressure to close NYC schools as subway and bus shutdown starting soon seems very likely.
https://nypost.com/2020/03/12/city-s...carranza-says/
Highlight of the article is
A participant at the meeting of the Chancellor’s Parent Advisory Committee asked Carranza about a petition with about 108,000 signatures demanding a systemwide shutdown.
The schools chief said the DOE would maintain the status quo “until 108,000 epidemiologists” make the same demand.
