    Acceleration or skipping grades

    Folks

Does anybody know the official policy within the NYC DOE? Is acceleration or skipping grades still done?

    Thanks

Things such as repeating a grade or in contrast skipping a grade are really not done any more in the NYC DOE public school system. Instead, allegedly "a student receives the support they need to succeed" (sic)

How old is your child and what grade(s) are you hoping to be skipped?

School is not just about academics but also for social development and skipping a grade is depriving a child a full year of that.

UPK currently and hoping to get into 1st grade - reasons being I spent some time with 1st grade books from a neighbor and then even 2nd grade books and did some testing and my child performed quite well

What kind of books are we talking about? What kind of testing are we talking about? What does quite well mean?

I'm not sure I'm getting the full picture, so'll issue an executive summary that's likely erroneous on multiple points: It sounds like you're saying that you have a 4 year old academically capable of starting 3rd grade? If not, please elaborate. Thanks.

Why don't we start with official DOE policy first before potentially wasting our time on a discussion about my child's capabilities. If acceleration is or isn't offered by the DOE?

Acceleration means different things to different people. What type of acceleration are you referring to?
